Over the years there have been many fitness trends that have swept the nation, but I don’t think there has ever been anything as big as Zumba. Every gym and studio across the country is now offering some form of Zumba class. If you haven’t yet heard of this fitness party, we’re here to tell you all about it. It’s so exciting that you’ll soon be heading to a local club to try a Zumba class out yourself.
What is Zumba?
Zumba, which started in Columbia in the 90’s, is a fusion of Latin rhythms and easy to learn dance moves. Usually consisting of hour long workouts, the class includes intervals of cardio to burn calories and resistance exercises to tone the body. You use your own body weight for resistance so minimal equipment, if any, is needed.
Starting with a warm up, getting your body used to the rhythms, the instructor will them quicken the pace into faster dance steps. Throughout the class you’ll be taken though a combination of fast and slow rhythms to keep your body working achieving a full body workout.
Who Can Zumba?
Zumba is great for anyone and all ages and fitness levels are welcome in the classes. Check your local gym’s schedule as well because some places will offer different Zumba classes to meet different client’s needs. There are kids classes as well as one’s tailored for seniors. Typically Zumba participants are women ranging in age from 20 to 50. The steps are easily modified to suit any age or fitness level.
Do you get bored easily at the gym and can never seem to stay motivated to stick it through? If so, than Zumba would be great for you. Zumba organizers ask participants to “Join the Party”, and that’s exactly what a Zumba class is; A Party! You’ll be smiling, laughing and even singing along. It’s so enjoyable that soon you’ll forget you’re working out.
How to Prepare?
No specific equipment or clothing is required to participate in a Zumba class which makes it accessible to anyone. There are different types of Zumba clothes that can be purchase, typically consisting of pants and tops made in vibrant colours, but it’s not necessary to buy them. Just make sure you’re wearing something comfortable that moves with your body.
Even if you’ve never taken an aerobics class or dance class before, you shouldn’t be put off. The instructor will show you the basic steps at the beginning of the class. Start by working on those and even if you don’t get them right away just keep your body moving to the music and you’ll still get a great workout. Try not to get discouraged. It won’t be long before you’ve mastered the moves and are able to add your own flare to the routines.
If you aren’t used to working out in a group setting and are a little nervous, ask a friend to join you the first time or do a few Zumba videos at home first. The Nintendo Wii games console also offers a Zumba game that you play. Try it out a few times before you tackle a class.
